Organic farming – sufficient for everyone?

Organic farming – sufficient for everyone?

There is said to be a food shortage in the world, and this said shortage has often been used both for and against conventional farming techniques. For the detractors, this shortage is concerning because it means conventional farming simply doesn’t make enough food for everyone. For the supporters, the shortage is used as a tool to convince people that if conventional farming can’t produce enough, what guarantee is there that other farming methods will work.

The truth is that food production with current agricultural methods is sufficient at the moment, the real problem is the unequal distribution of food. And as far as transition to other methods is concerned, there is plenty of evidence to suggest that organic farming can be as good as if not better than providing enough food for everyone.

The main concern is food security, which is basically a term that encompasses the lack of crops failing and a sufficient supply of food being produced. With organic farming methods, the rotation of crops and use of multiple species, the biodiversity and respect for the soil ensure that the rate of things like crop failure and low yield is extremely low. Basically the effectiveness of organic farming methods ensures that food security will always be there.

However, as far as a transition to organic farming is concerned, the effectiveness depends on what kind of system existed previously. So for instance a transition to organic farming can produce the same or better yields in green-revolution areas and in places where traditional rain-fed crops are harvested. In industrial nations, however, organic farming may not yield as positive results, because the existing system favors conventional agriculture.
